چکیده

In this study, the characteristics of tetraploid and diploid watermelon’s flowers, fruits, seeds were examined, their differences investigated. As plant material, ST101 ST82; WL92, WL124, WL134, WL216, WL259-B WL235 used. Flower (pollen viability, pollen germination, number anthers per anther flower); fruit (weight, length, diameter, rind thickness TSS) seed (weight 1000 seed, width, thickness, full number, yield, embryo/seed ratio, germination emergence) parameters terms parameters, watermelon has a higher value than watermelon. According to research results, average was found be in watermelons at 74.48% 71.62%. Pollen viability determined highest WL 235 (95.53%). had values, but length decreased (diploid 19.32 cm; 15.33 cm) significantly. Considering values watermelons, significant decrease occurred yield ratio (57.22%, 225.48 6.33 g/fruit, 57.51% respectively diploids; 37.31%, 57.67 4.90 46.42% tetraploid), no difference observed other parameters.

Comparison of ploidy level screening methods in watermelon: Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai

Direct (chromosome counting) and indirect (flow cytometry, stomatal size, chloroplast number of the guard cells and morphological observations) methods were tested in order to determine the ploidy levels of haploid and diploid watermelon plants of the cultivars Sugar Baby and Halep Karasi. The results revealed that all the techniques tested can be used successfully. It was determined that while...

Effects of season, time of fruit harvesting and after-ripening durations on the quality of ‘egusi’ melon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum and Nakai] seed

A study of the after-ripening of ‘egusi’ melon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsun and Nakai] fruits was undertaken at the Teaching and Research farm of the University of Agriculture Makurdi in the wet and dry season productions of 2005 and 2007. The aim was to monitor its effects on seed quality. Fruits were harvested at two leaf colour stages [i.e. when leaves started turning yellow (LTY), and...

Combining Ability Analysis in Complete Diallel Cross of Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai)

The experiments were carried out in two research stations (MARDI Bukit Tangga, Kedah, and MARDI Seberang Perai, Penang) in Malaysia. The crossings were performed using the four inbred lines in complete diallel cross including selfs and reciprocals. We evaluated the yield components and fruit characters such as fruit yield per plant, vine length, days to fruit maturity, fruit weight, total solub...

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai) Juice Modulates Oxidative Damage Induced by Low Dose X-Ray in Mice

Watermelon is a natural product that contains high level of antioxidants and may prevent oxidative damage in tissues due to free radical generation following an exposure to ionizing radiation. The present study aimed to investigate the radioprotective effects of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai) juice against oxidative damage induced by low dose X-ray exposure in mice. T...
